| The Leadership Institute in Judicial Education has been in existence since 1989. Originally funded by the State Justice Institute in Alexandria, Virginia, LIJE is now funded by a congressional earmark through the Bureau of Justice Assistance in the U.S. Department of Justice. During its sixteen-year history, approximately 450 judges, judicial educators, court administrators, and other court personnel from 45 states, Guam and the District of Columbia have attended the annual six-day intensive program along with nine national organizations that provide continuing professional education for judges: National Judicial College, Justice Management Institute, American Bar Association’s Judicial Division, National Association for Court Management, National Center for State Courts, National Association for State Judicial Educators, National Tribal Judicial Center, National Association of Women Judges, and the National Judicial Institute of Canada. Over 2500 additional court professionals have attended the On-Site Institutes and other national presentations. In addition, the curriculum of LIJE has been taught to judges from Albania, Brazil, Canada, Egypt, Jordan, Macedonia, Morocco, and Russia. Professor Patricia Murrell, Ed.D., is the Director, and Kathryn E. Story, J.D., is the Project Coordinator.
