Patricia H. Murrell

Patricia H. Murrell is the Director of the Center for the Study of Higher Education and a Professor of Higher and Adult Education. She has received the University of Memphis’ Distinguished Teaching Service Award, the College of Education’s Crader Award, and was twice cited for superior performance in University research. She has consulted with numerous colleges, professional organizations, nonprofit groups, and corporations, including Federal Express Corporation’s Management Leadership Institute, the Lilly Endowment’s Conference on the Liberal Arts, the Council of Independent Colleges, the Educational Testing Service, the Episcopal Clergy Leadership Project, and the Clergy Reflection, Education and Discernment Opportunity. She has written over 50 articles, books and book chapters on learning styles, outcomes assessment, and adult development theory in higher education and professional performance. She is a Fellow in the Society for Values in Higher Education, served on the Advisory Board for the ERIC Clearinghouse on Higher Education, and is on the Board of the Institute for Court Management in Williamsburg, VA.

Dr. Murrell is the Director of the Leadership Institute in Judicial Education and the Institute for Faculty Excellence in Judicial Education, both funded by the State Justice Institute. She has worked with judicial educators in numerous states, as well as with the Federal Judicial Center, the National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges, the NOW Legal Defense and Education Fund, the National Association for Court Managers, the Women Judges' Fund for Justice, the Texas Center for Legal Ethics and Professionalism, the National Association of Bar Executives, the Conference of Chief Justices and Court Administrators, the Justice Management Institute, the National Drug Court Institute, the American Bar Association, the Blue Ridge Institute for Southern Juvenile and Family Court Judges, and the National Center for State Courts. She served on the Advisory Board of the National Resource Center for Collaboration in Criminal Justice, served as a faculty member for the National Symposium on the Future of Judicial Branch Education, and delivered the keynote address for the National Association of State Judicial Educators. Most recently she presented the leadership institute curriculum for the Russian Academy of Judges in Irkutsk, Siberia, and for the Court Modernization Project in Skopje, Macedonia, with special attention to the curriculum’s implications for democracy.

The principles of the Leadership Institute have been adapted to a variety of other professions, including health care. A retreat for the board and staff of the Mid-South Foundation for Medical Care, Inc. and a strategic planning retreat for Justice in Health Care utilized portions of the curriculum. Through the Maurice Elliott Leadership Institute, the Center joined The University of Memphis’ partnership with Methodist Healthcare in an interdisciplinary and custom designed program responding to core competencies identified as essential for successful leadership in the health care industry. The potential for building community by providing a common experience and a greater understanding of human development and learning holds promise for increasing the effectiveness of medical care as well as the delivery of that care.

Pat is a graduate of Millsaps College, Jackson, Mississippi, and The University of Mississippi. In addition, she has completed Leadership Memphis, Federal Express Corporation’s Exploring Leadership Program, Harvard’s Institute for Continuing Professional Education, Rhodes College’s Executive Leadership Seminar, and Innovation Associates’ Leadership and Mastery, Toronto, Canada.
