Dr. Reginald L. Green, professor in the Department of Leadership, has announced that the university is partnering with the Tennessee State Department of Education, Johns Hopkins University, and Fayette County Schools in building leadership capability in central administrators with the outcome of increasing student academic achievement across the district. The model used in the project, created at the U of M’s Center for Urban Schools Leadership, which Green directs, was selected by the state and has been funded at above $300,000. Activities conducted by the leadership team have included a four-day Leadership Enhancement Seminar in early August with all school administrators in Fayette County Schools, and a two-day workshop in late August with three-person teams from each of the district’s 10 schools. The focus of the latter meeting was to enhance effective relationships between central administrators and the teams, with the outcome of interfacing district personnel and creating a shared vision. Tennessee State Department of Education personnel attended both meetings; Johns Hopkins University personnel attended the meeting with central administrators. The team from CUSL will continue throughout the year conducting walk-through observations in each school (10) collecting data to assist Johns Hopkins University in identifying strategies that teams can use with faculty to enhance the academic achievement of students. If effective, the model can be used statewide and nationally. Team members, in additon to Green, are Dr. Larry McNeal, Chair, Department of Leadership; Dr. Sharon Cypress, Freed-Hardeman University; and Dr. Lisa Watts, Project Coordinator. Persons interested in knowing more about the project can contact Dr. Green at 6778- 5935, CUSL office.
