Courts as Learning Organizations: A Workgroup Conference University of Memphis, October 15-18, 2007 Application - Due August 31, 2007 Workgroup Brochure An Exclusive Invitation Join us in the fall in Memphis, Tennessee, for an exciting and innovative event reserved for alumni of the Leadership Institute in Judicial Education (LIJE) and the Institute for Faculty Excellence in Judicial Education (IFEJE). Connect with other court professionals from across the nation who are actively involved in promoting justice through professional development, participate in an enriching ELO (experiential learning opportunity), learn from leaders in the field, and collaborate to create new knowledge and understanding. Conference Format We are using the Workgroup Conference as our framework for this event. Following a stimulating keynote address, groups of participants will be able to select a pressing issue in the courts around which they will spend a large part of the conference working. The small group will also decide on a “product” that will result from their dialogue. These products may range from an article for publication, a judicial education program, a public outreach project, or demonstration project that will address a pressing issue within the justice system. As the conference progresses, additional plenary sessions will bring the full group together for additional input into the ongoing work. In addition to learning from your colleagues in court systems across the country, we will work with and learn from inspiring keynote speakers including Hon. Christine Durham, Chief Justice, Utah Supreme Court, cofounder of LIJE, and the recipient of the 2007 Rehnquist Award; Dr. Chuck Claxton, Appalachian State University, founding director of LIJE; Dr. Pat Murrell, University of Memphis, director of LIJE and IFEJE; and Dr. Robert Neimeyer, Eminent Professor of Psychology, University of Memphis. Dr. Ellie Greenberg, Vice Chair, Colorado Judicial Institute, will serve as conference facilitator. Application Process We anticipate a large number of persons who will be interested in attending and we will be accepting participants through an application process. You can access the application here. In the application, we are interested in what your attendance at LIJE or IFEJE has meant to you, both personally and professionally. What impact has it had on your life and your work? What impact has the program had on judicial education and on the work of the courts? Once selected to participate, it is your responsibility to attend the Conference in October 2007 and to work with your selected Workgroup to complete your group’s product by January 31, 2008. If you had attended LIJE, you will also be asked to participate in an Impact Evaluation. This will include a questionnaire and a possible telephone interview regarding your experience with LIJE. Accommodations and Costs Suite rooms are reserved at the Holiday Inn at The University of Memphis for $109 plus 15.9% tax, and regular queen rooms at the Fogelman Executive Conference Center at The University of Memphis for $90 plus 15.9% tax. Participants are responsible for travel and lodging; the program costs and the meals will be paid by the Institute’s grant from the Bureau of Justice Assistance.
