Physical Education Certificate Program K-12
(Tennessee License Code 420)

The following information is for students who are currently seeking certification in physical education and can be placed in one of the following three categories:

  • Students who have a degree with a major in a non-teaching area other than Physical Education and seeking initial license and certification (i.e., Sociology, Criminal Justice, Business)
  • Students with a non-teaching major in Physical Education
  • Add-on Endorsement – Student already has a teaching license

Students who have a degree with a major in a non-teaching area other than Physical Education and seeking initial license and certification (i.e., Sociology, Criminal Justice, Business)

To meet requirements for certification and initial licensure in Physical Education, students must complete the following requirements:

  1. Be admitted to the university as a non-degree seeking graduate.

  2. Contact the office of Mary Lanier (Ball Hall 202) to have transcripts evaluated to determine that all general education requirements have been met. In addition, contact the HMSE Academic Services Coordinator to have transcripts evaluated to determine if any PETE course requirements have been met.

  3. Apply for and be admitted to the Teacher Education Program (TEP). Application forms for TEP are available online or in Ball Hall room 202 or online.

  4. Complete required PETE courses, Professional Pedagogy courses, student teaching in PETE, and the student teaching seminar for initial licensure:

    Required PETE Courses:

    • PETE 7001 - Applied Scientific Principles in Physical Education (3 hours)
    • PETE 7002 - Curriculum in Physical Education (3 hours)
    • PETE 7003 - Principles of Teaching Individual and Team Sports (3 hours)
    • PETE 7004 - Learner Assessment in School Based Physical Education (3 hours)
    • PETE 7005 - Teaching Strategies in Gymnastics, Dance, and Movement (3 hours)
    • PETE 7006 - Instructional Strategies and Approaches in Physical Education (3 hours)
    • PETE 7007 - Advanced Clinical Practicum (9 hours)
    • PETE 7008 - Professional Seminar (1 hour)

    Note: First Aid and CPR are required. All students must have current certification at time of graduation.

    Professional Education Pedagogy courses required by the College:

    • EDPR 7117 - Life-Span Human Development (3 hours)
    • LEAD 6000 - Foundational Studies: Education, Schooling, and American Society Settings (3 hours)
    • SPED 7000 - Psycho-Educational Problems of Exceptional Children and Adults (3 hours)
    • ID&T 7061 - Media and Technology Utilization (2 hours or test out)

  5. After taking all course work, students must pass ETS PRAXIS II exam(s) to meet state requirements.

    Test booklets for registration can be picked up at the Info Center at the corner of Central and Patterson, or the Testing Center at Brister Hall, or online at ETS.

Students with a non-teaching major in Physical Education

To meet requirements for certification and initial licensure in Physical Education, students must complete the following requirements:

  1. Be admitted to the university as a non-degree seeking graduate.

  2. Apply for and be admitted to the Teacher Education Program (TEP) and complete student teaching and the student teaching seminar for initial licensure. Application forms for TEP are available online or in Ball Hall room 202.

  3. Contact the office of Mary Lanier (Ball Hall 202) to have transcripts evaluated to determine that all general education requirements have been met. Students must have taken courses equivalent to the following:

    • EDPR 7117 - Life-Span Human Development (3 hours)
    • LEAD 6000 - Foundational Studies: Education, Schooling, and American Society Settings (3 hours)
    • SPED 7000 - Psycho-Educational Problems of Exceptional Children and Adults (3 hours)
    • ID&T 7061 - Media and Technology Utilization (2 hours or test out)

  4. Have transcripts evaluated by PETE Unit Head to determine if PETE course requirements have been met. Students will receive credit if they have taken courses equivalent to the following:

    • PETE 7001 - Applied Scientific Principles in Physical Education (3 hours)
    • PETE 7002 - Curriculum in Physical Education (3 hours)
    • PETE 7003 - Principles of Teaching Individual and Team Sports (3 hours)
    • PETE 7004 - Learner Assessment in School Based Physical Education (3 hours)
    • PETE 7005 - Teaching Strategies in Gymnastics, Dance, and Movement (3 hours)
    • PETE 7006 - Instructional Strategies and Approaches in Physical Education (3 hours)
    • PETE 7007 - Advanced Clinical Practicum (9 hours)
    • PETE 7008 - Professional Seminar (1 hour)

Add-on Endorsement - Student already has a teaching license

To meet requirements for add-on endorsement in Physical Education students must complete the following requirements:

  1. Begin application process by meeting with Mary Lanier in room 202 of Ball Hall
  2. Be admitted to the university as a non-degree seeking graduate.
  3. Take the following required courses in Physical Education:
  4. Required PETE Courses:

    • PETE 7001 - Applied Scientific Principles in Physical Education (3 hours)
    • PETE 7002 - Curriculum in Physical Education (3 hours)
    • PETE 7003 - Principles of Teaching Individual and Team Sports (3 hours)
    • PETE 7004 - Learner Assessment in School Based Physical Education (3 hours)
    • PETE 7005 - Teaching Strategies in Gymnastics, Dance, and Movement (3 hours)
    • PETE 7006 - Instructional Strategies and Approaches in Physical Education (3 hours)
    • PETE 7007 - Advanced Clinical Practicum (3 hours)
    • PETE 7008 - Professional Seminar (1 hour)

  5. Students in this track do not have to apply to the TEP, but must apply for Advanced Clinical Practicum in Ball Hall room 202. Students must attend a mandatory student teaching meeting in fall or spring. Practicum will last for five weeks and a university supervisor will evaluate during that time. Students who have a valid teaching license should have already met requirements expected of a person in the Teacher Education Program. If the student has a license from an accredited teacher education program, he/she was admitted to TEP, and would not need to be admitted again.

  6. After taking all course work, students must pass ETS PRAXIS II exam(s) to meet state requirements.
